“The Shark” by Lost Surfboards: Quad Fish for Smaller Days

The Shark by Lost SurfboarsLast fall I was looking for one more board to add to my quiver so I spent a lot of time searching online and at the shops for this particular board. All I knew was that I wanted a smaller wave board that was a quad. I finally found it at Surf n Sea in Haleiwa, a Lost surfboard called “The Shark”. Lost surfboards came out with “The Shark” several years ago, and since that time they’ve made a lot of changes. The board that I picked up was Mason Ho’s old board, a local pro who is about the same size as me, so it worked out great. The board is a 5’6” quad-fin fish and was nearly as good as new except for a broken fin box that I was able to fix up myself. I’ve had this board throughout the North Shore season and been able to test it in all kinds of conditions.

The model that I have is the quad fish tail. Mine is 5’6”, which is a little smaller than my typical shortboard length. The board works best in 2-5 foot Hawaiian surf (4-9 foot faces). One thing I noticed is that the wave type makes a big difference too. Riding it in solid 4-5 foot Rocky Point the board worked great, but then taking it to Freddy’s on the same size day it was sliding out really badly during hard turns. The Shark by Lost SurfboarsRocky Point is a much more bowled up and hollow wave whereas Freddy’s is slower moving and crumbly. I experienced the same thing surfing many spots throughout the season. The board works best on a faster, bowled up and hollow wave. It still works on slower moving rippable waves, but not above a certain size. Overall the board performs very well.

I’ve owned a few Lost surfboards in the past and never had any noticeable problems with the strength of the board. They’ve all lasted for long periods of time with regular use. This board is no different. It made it through Mason Ho’s abuse first, then through a North Shore season with only minor and easy to fix dings. “The Shark” is a Lost Surfboard worth owning, but not as your main board, though it’s definitely fun to mess around with when the conditions are right.
