The “Big Green” Stand Up Paddle Board and Pohaku C4 Waterman Paddle
With the recent stand up paddle surfing trend, I decided to interview John Dornellas to find out about his stand up paddle board. John’s been windsurfing for years and recently took up stand up paddle surfing as well. His board is 10 feet long, shaped by Sean Ordonez, and called the “Big Green”, available from S.O.S. Shapes. Sean Ordonez has years of experience in shaping windsurfing boards, and a lot of the same technology goes into creating his stand up paddle boards. They are very durable and built to withstand almost anything the ocean can throw at them. The board has a wide diamond tail, making it very maneuverable, which is great if you want a high performance stand up paddle board. The stock fin works great and is adjustable to different settings. Even in 20-foot waves, the board holds its line and doesn’t slide out. It costs around $1600 and is well worth the price. John’s been riding this board for a year now and says its “magic”.
John uses the Pohaku C4 Waterman paddle to go with his stand up paddle board. He’s had two of them now and loves them. The paddle is made of carbon fiber, and is extremely lightweight. The paddle has a smaller and thinner blade than a long distance paddle would have, making it easy to handle while moving fast on a wave. The paddle costs around $340. I’ve never used it myself, but John is a very talented stand up paddle surfer who swears by this paddle.
