Surfing Waimea Bay for the First Time: What You Should Know
Many surfers look at big wave surfing at Waimea Bay as being something reserved for the pros and locals of the North Shore. But if you’re crazy enough to try and prepare yourself in the right way it could be you out there charging on your next trip to the North Shore. I interviewed a good friend of mine, Andy Pierce, to find out more about what to do to prepare to surf Waimea Bay:
Here are a couple things you need to know before big wave surfing at the Bay:
- Get the right board. Whether you buy it used out there, find one to rent, or ship one out there yourself, your going to need a big wave gun that’s at least over nine feet long.
- Get the right leash. You need a thick big wave leash that has an emergency pin you can pull to release it from your ankle if the board is dragging you down.
- Get into shape. Your lungs need to be strong so you’ll survive the long hold-downs.
- Get some experience. You need to be comfortable in other big waves. The more experience the better.

Once you’ve done all this you’ll be ready to surf Waimea Bay on your trip to the North Shore. You also might want to try and time your trip with a big swell if at all possible, because Waimea Bay doesn’t break all that often during the season, but if you’re lucky and catch it, it will be a life-changing experience.
