Surfboard Ding Repair: Solarez Vs. Quick Fix
I have been a long-time fan of using Solarez to do minor surfboard ding repair. Solarez works really well at patching those little dings that don’t require the attention of a full ding repair kit with fiberglass, resin, catalyst, and a lot of work. I’ve used Solarez for years and never looked into the other options. Recently I picked up a bottle of Quick Fix, another type of UV curing resin, and gave it a try. There are some obvious differences between the two resins, both having their pros and cons.
Solarez is a UV curing resin that has small bits of fiberglass in it. The small pieces of fiberglass are what I like about Solarez. It adds a lot of strength to the damaged area that is being fixed. Resin alone can crack pretty easily, but with the fiberglass mixed into the gel, it does a much better job of not cracking in the future as you surf on the fixed up board. One of the downsides to using Solarez is that it can be hard to manipulate into the shape you want. This is directly associated with the fragments of fiberglass in the resin. It sometimes causes chunks of resin to move around together while you are trying to smooth out the surface.
Quick Fix is the opposite of Solarez in terms of strengths and weaknesses. It is a pure resin, with no fiberglass pieces mixed in. This makes it extremely easy to manipulate and shape into the way you want it on the board. Even after it starts to cure in the sun you can make minor changes to the resin to smooth it out into the ding. The downside of Quick Fix is that without the fiberglass in the resin, it is weaker, and more susceptible to cracks while surfing on the fixed up board.
My recommendation is to try them both and see what works best for you. Even after seeing how easy it is to use Quick Fix, I still prefer Solarez because of my long history of using it. Using UV curing resins for surfboard ding repair is one of the easiest options out there, so spend sometime with the different products so you can figure out which one you like working with more.
