Sanuk Sandals: The Sidewalk Surfers
Sanuk Sandals have been around since 1997, and have always confused me a little bit. They used to have ads for the Sanuk sidewalk surfers saying that they are not shoes, but sandals. But to anyone who knew what a shoe looked like, they pretty much looked like shoes. I guess what they meant was that the sole was made of the same material as beach sandals, and after purchasing a pair, I realized that they really did feel like I had sandals on rather than shoes.
Sanuk is the Thai word for happiness and balance, which is the theme of the company. They have all kinds of different creative designs for the Sanuk sidewalk surfers, inspired by some of the team riders themselves. Sanuk has well-known surfers who ride for them such as Donavon Frankenreiter and Dave Rastovich. These guys really fit the theme of the company, representing the sandals well. The Sanuk sidewalk surfers are very comfortable and are definitely unique in style and design. Some people completely hate the way they look while others love them. I am kind of in the middle somewhere.
I think the Sanuk sidewalk surfers really are cool, and I like the ones that I own, but I don’t find myself wearing them that often. I find that if you wear them without socks, your feet can get pretty sweaty being in an enclosed area against a rubber sole. If you wear them with socks, they are pretty comfortable and you wont have any problems. But the whole point to them is that they should be used as beach sandals. You want to wear them without socks, but then you face the sweaty feet problem. See what I am getting at?
For what they cost, which isn’t that much, I think everyone should get a pair of Sanuk sidewalk surfers to try out and see what they think about them. You can get a pair for less than $40, and if you catch them on sale (which I have several times) then you can get them for much less than that. I personally think they look rad, and are especially good to just wear around the house or for short periods of time. If you end up not liking them, then still take a look at the traditional styled Sanuk Sandals, because a lot of them are pretty cool as well.
