Retro Boardshorts
Not too long ago, retro boardshorts started making a comeback in the world of surfing. The short shorts with bright colors and radical patterns seen often in the 80’s are now being made again by many of the big surf brands. Long-existing companies like Quiksilver and Billabong have been the leaders at re-introducing the retro boardshorts to the market today. For the most part, retro styled boardshorts are not any different from modern boardshorts, aside from the length of the shorts.
Modern boardshorts are around 20 to 22 inches long whereas most of the retro boardshorts are around 16 inches long. Some brands have started making 18 and 19 inch boardshorts, which is a little in between the two, creating something completely new. A lot of retro boardshorts have button attachments around the waist instead of the tie. I have had a problem with my Quiksilver retro boardshorts coming unsnapped while surfing. I no longer wear retro boardshorts while surfing because of this problem, but I know a lot of people who do and don’t seem to have the same problem.
If you are interested in purchasing a pair of retro boardshorts, some good brands to take a look at are Quiksilver, Billabong, Modern Amusement, and Volcom.
