Quiksilver Surf Shirt: A New Kind of Rash Guard
I always notice the pictures of pro’s surfing in tropical waves wearing t-shirts to shelter themselves from the sun. Several times I have tried to do the same, but always end up with terrible rashes or with the shirt being pulled over my head while getting rolled up by a wave. Recently I picked up a Quiksilver surf shirt, which is a t-shirt made out of the same material as a rash guard. I’d never heard of a surf shirt before I got my hands on this Quiksilver one, so I gave it a test run across the street from my house to see what it was like. I actually liked it a lot. I hope to see more surf shirts from Quiksilver and other brands in the future.
The Quiksilver surf shirt takes care of the two main issues of surfing in regular t-shirts. First of all, it doesn’t give you rashes. Being made out of the same material as a rash guard, the material is soft, stretchy, and very comfortable to wear. A friend and I both tested out the surf shirt and found that you can hardly even feel it on you while paddling and surfing.
The other thing that happens when wearing a t-shirt surfing is that when you fall it can get all tangled up and pulled over your head. The Quiksilver surf shirt has a loop at the bottom that you can tie your boardshorts. No matter what the waves did to me the shirt stayed on nicely and I never found myself tangled up in it like I have with t-shirts.
There are a few things you should know about the surf shirt. It does a great job of keeping you protected from the sun and from rashes, but it also keeps you very cool. It is best in really warm areas. I was freezing wearing it in Hawaii in March. It kept me nice and wet, which isn’t the best thing to be when the wind is blowing. The shirt is also limited in design. There are very few of them being sold, so there aren’t many options for new artwork or colors. But if everyone starts testing them out then I’m sure the companies will catch on and give us all kinds of options in the future.
