O’Neill Surf Booties: The Heat Ninja ST Boot
If you are looking for some surf booties to wear in the wintertime in Southern California, then the O’Neill Heat Ninja’s are the best that I know of. I normally hate wearing booties because I feel like I lose that connection I have with my bare feet to my surfboard. Most the time I wear booties, I like to blame them for every mistake made on a wave, and often times I blame them for ruining an entire surf session.
Maybe if you live in a really cold place where you wear booties everyday then you eventually just become used to them. But for a surfer from Southern California that only has to wear them a few weeks out of the year when the temperatures really drop, booties just suck.
These booties by O’Neill changed my whole perspective on wearing booties. Most of the booties I have worn have tons of rubber molding all over the bottom and sides of the foot, with straps going in every possible direction to keep them tight. The Heat Ninja’s are more like 3mm wetsuit socks. They are very flexible and thin; making it so when you stand up on your board it doesn’t feel that far off from riding barefoot. The ones I have are actually not the Heat Ninja models, but they are made in the exact same way, just a few years older.
When the water temperature gets down to the low 50’s during Southern California winters, my feet usually go completely numb after an hour of being in the water. The only thing worse than wearing booties is having completely numb feet because then you really get frustrated trying to control your board.
The Heat Ninja’s by O’Neill are a perfect solution to fight numbness in the feet and the annoyance of wearing thick booties. They are perfect for temperatures in the low 50’s, keeping your feet warm enough to last you a few hours. So if you hate wearing thick booties and also hate numb feet, these might be some booties to try before you completely give up.
One more thing: they only cost around $30, so it won’t even set you back too much just to give them a try.

Great review.
I’ve surfed some cold places and its always hard to find a compromise between warmth and funtionality.
i’m currently staying in the UK where booties are used almost all year round.
At this price there is no excuse not to keep your feet warm.
Cheers

Heads up! I actually prefer a bridge over the toes, prevents getting your leash stuck in that little slot, wrenching your toes off your foot.
