Fuel TV Surf Contest Products: Wax and Sunscreen
While I was at the Point Mugu Surf Contest a little while ago, I made sure to get my hands on everything I saw that was being given away for free. I don’t have a lot of money to spare trying out new products that I could potentially not like, so often times I find myself purchasing what I am used to already. But in the case of free giveaways…I’ll try out anything. One of the most interesting giveaways at the event was surf wax and sunscreen by Fuel TV. Obviously we can’t expect Fuel TV to be a leader in the wax and sunscreen industry, but I figured why not give them a try.
I’ll start with the wax, and if you are a fan of Fuel TV as I am myself, then forgive me for tearing apart their surf wax. This stuff is pretty bad. Maybe it is just the water temperature in California right now that doesn’t like this surf wax, but according to the label, it is “all temperature, all water”. The label on the wax really talks it up by saying things like “superior traction and longer lifespan than most waxes”, “this wax maintains its long lasting lifespan even when other waxes are applied over it”, and “it can prolong the lifespan of any pre-existing wax already applied”. It sounds like this is the best stuff ever, should work in all temperatures, and last a lifetime. Truth is, all it did was flatten the wax that was already on my board. Its hard to tell in the photo, but those bumps used to be a lot better. This surf wax scraped off chunks of wax and would not stick. Once I got a decent little layer on the board, it didn’t even feel very grippy at all compared to Stick Bumps, which is usually my first choice in surf wax. In the end…I am not sold on this wax, and don’t even think I will try and use up the rest of the bar.
I won’t be as harsh on the sunscreen, but it still isn’t my favorite. It looks, smells, and applies just like any old generic sunscreen. But it did keep my face from getting burned during a 3-hour surf session. So it works. That doesn’t mean go out looking for a place to get Fuel TV’s sunscreen, but if you happen across an event where Fuel TV is present and you can grab a bottle of this stuff, don’t hesitate to do it. We all need to protect ourselves from the sun and if you can do it for free, then why not?
Now that I just basically slammed two products from Fuel TV, let me end this by saying that these free products should not become a representation of what Fuel TV is all about. I love watching Fuel, I love what they do, and I am so glad they were there to sponsor the Point Mugu Surf Contest, which would not be able to run without big support from companies like Fuel. The fact that they had these products made and wanted to give out stuff for free to thousands of people is really cool. I just think I’ll stick to using my Headhunters Sunscreen and Sticky Bumps surf wax, and flip the channel to Fuel TV when the waves are flat and I need some in-home entertainment.

companies try way to hard sometimes to get their hands in everything, and the result is often a flop. as you said though, FuelTV is rad. best place on TV to find action sports. and surfing is impossible to find except for on Fuel. well maybe it will be on ESPN here soon with the “new” tour.
